Mark Hoppus' SXSW Pick: Rogue Wave

Hopp on Pop

Rogue Wave
Rogue Wave

When he's not commandeering the stage as the boisterous bassist for SoCal punks Blink-182, Tweeting wisdom to more than 1.6 million followers, or handling album production duties for bands like Motion City Soundtrack and New Found Glory, you'd think Mark Hoppus would turn down the music.

Not. Possible.

In our continuing series, Hopp on Pop, Hoppus shares his favorite acts, culled from his incessant pursuit of all that rocks -- and now he's picking bands slated to play next week's SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. (Click here to discover Mark's previous picks, including SXSW performer Neon Trees, pop punkers We the Kings, British buzz band Two Door Cinema Club, and many more.) Check out his new entry below, and come back to SPIN.com every Wednesday for Mark's latest discovery.

ROGUE WAVE

HOMETOWN:
Oakland, CA

THE BASICS:
Frontman Zach Rogue's 2003 solo effort earned him a record deal with venerable indie label Sub Pop. Later joined by core member Pat Spurgeon (drums, guitar, vocals), the quintet -- whose music you've heard in movies like Napoleon Dynamite, Just Friends, and Spider-Man 3 -- has just released their fourth album, Permalight, a sprightly departure from their brooding earlier work. That should translate to good times for partygoers at SPIN's annual SXSW bash March 19, where the band is set to perform. They're also one of SPIN's 50 Must-Hear Bands for SXSW 2010. Read more about them here, and check out the full list of 50 bands.

WHERE HOPP HEARD THEM FIRST:
"I've seen the name Rogue Wave quite a bit over the past couple of years, but never took the time to listen to their music. Last weekend, while searching for new records for my newly-installed turntable, I saw their new album on the shelf and picked it up. Best decision I made at the record store in a while."

WHY THEY ROCK:
"Indie rock in the vein of Death Cab for Cutie (although I can already guess they're tired of the comparison). From mellow low-fi to upbeat pop to electronic to acoustic. Great lyrics and melodies. I really dig the way they'll break from a 4/4 structure into a few bars of 3/4 time then back into 4/4. Hopefully I'll get a chance to watch them live sometime soon."

HOPP'S TOP TRACK:
"Solitary Gun."

Their SXSW 2010 performances were disappointing. The band obviously was lacking the huge talent of Graham, who parted the band last year. Zach wasn't even into the new music, let alone the old music (which doesn't sound the same without Graham's samples, keyboarding and backup vocals). I didn't realize how much Graham made the band. Overall, disappointing performance by one of my favorite bands. Perhaps this is a direct reflection of discord in the band, but it was obvious the two guys Zach hired to take the place of Graham lacked energy and connection with the rest of the band and with the audience. Dominic is a great musician, but he, too, lacks connection with the audience. Zach is usually a bit more expressive during live shows, but this time he obviously was missing something. I mean, Zach forgot his own lyrics several times. It was quite disheartening to see it all happen live. Sorry guys, I love your old music, but the new stuff lacks the inventiveness and rawness I loved about you and the live performances lack energy and focus.

Wow, these guys are amazing!!! This song is so good. Digging it. Once again Mark Hoppus has turned me on to another band.

I've seen them a couple of times in San Francisco (they're from Oakland) and they are some of the best concerts I've been to in a while. Lots of energy, lots of fun, and they love their fans! Doesn't hurt that they recently played Noise Pop and brought John Vanderslice up on stage to sing with them!

SXSW 2010 Cancelled Due to Lack of Interest

AUSTIN-According to Mayor, Lee Leffingwell, this year’s South by Southwest Music Festival will be cancelled due to the lack of interest shown by musicians, people working in the music industry, and the citizens of Austin. “To my surprise, this year, there have been barely any bands applying for a spot at one of our many... »

Idea...pick a band that we haven't heard before.
Isn't this segment supposed to bring unknown or little known bands to light?
Two Door Cinema Club and The Temper Trap were pretty good picks, in those respects. But We The Kings? Are you serious? Nearly all of these bands have been heard by your average radio listener, either in a movie or via radio.
C,mon, Spin, C'MON!
Bands that should be on this segment...Animal Kingdom, Toro y Moi, Solid Gold, Breakbot, Fyfe Dangerfield, Lady of the Sunshine, Whitest Boy Alive, Blind Pilot, White Denim.

Definitely true they are awesome live. Oddly enough, I saw them open for Feist. Their last record was very solid, and they've been solid for a while. For me, they always seem like a good idea for a band to put on a mix, but when it comes down to the final cut, I usually leave them off. And what exactly does it mean to "...watch them love sometime soon."

My sister saw them in DC and she said they are way better live than they are recorded...and she said their concert was kick ass and they are really down to earth people...definitely a good pick
