MySpace Cracks Down on Copyright Infringement

MySpace.com announced today that it has licensed technology to prevent members from uploading protected music without proper rights. The new technology from Gracenote would allow the site to review uploads, compare them to those filed in Gracenote's database, and block the addition of any unauthorized material. Users who repeatedly try to upload unauthorized music will have their accounts deleted, according to Reuters. Newly acquired by News Corp. for almost $600 million dollars, MySpace has been under pressure from major record labels for copyright infringement. The site claims it takes down material in violation of copyright law when it is notified. Additionally, MySpace has said it will begin selling songs from almost 3 million unsigned bands and hopes to offer copyright-protected songs from major record labels.
