Tori Amos, 'Abnormally Attracted to Sin' (Universal Republic)

Message? Awesome. Medium? Not so much.

On her tenth studio album, Tori Amos writes no less penetratingly than she did on her first about the way women navigate the intersection between sex and power. "By the time you're 25, they will say, 'You've gone and blown it,' " she sings in "Curtain Call." "By the time you're 35, I must confide, you will have blown them all." Unfortunately, these hook-starved arrangements tend toward a static brand of ambient cabaret, which makes Amos' lyrics easy to tune out. Too many little earthquakes, not enough seismic jolts.

I've never been a music journalist, so i'm obviously not speaking from experience, but I just wonder what process the critics go through when listening to a new album. It might just be me, but I always have to listen to a new album at least 4 or 5 times before I can properly make my mind up about it. This is even more true with Tori's albums. She is not a pop singer who churns out immediately catchy tunes to cash in on instant gratification markets. Her records are deep, thought provoking and multi layered. They do not allow easy access to themselves. I'd like to know if the critics actually are able to listen to the records they review more than once. I'd almost suggest that if you are not able to do this with a Tori album, it's probably safer that you don't review it at all. There are a couple of 'dodgy' tracks - not bad ones, just not ones that fit comfortably in the flow of things. If you maybe put 500 miles and that guy onto the next piano collection, what you would have is a beautifully crafted record, which with every listen reveals new layers. Anyway, like i say, i'm not a journo so hey ho. (But just give it a few more goes...i know you'll like it!)
