EXCLUSIVE: New Song from High On Fire
MP3
High On Fire guitarist Matt Pike slings one of the heaviest axes in metal, and shreds faster than ever on his band's fifth studio album, Snakes for the Divine, out February 23. Hear an exclusive stream of the title track below!
The famed stoner-metal hero is also as angry and far out as he ever was. "'Snakes for the Divine' tells a tale of the atmospheric union of alien crossbreeding with Man's DNA and the creation of all Earth's religion by the reptilian agenda," he tells SPIN.com. "It will also kick your ass!"
The song glides between pounding speed and a violent-double time riff that could probably induce a fight or at least spill a few beers. It also clocks in at just over eight minutes, a veritable sea change for Pike, who referred to his 52-minute 1998 song "Jerusalem" as "lean."
Listen to "Snakes for the Divine," and tell us what you think about High On Fire's growl-filled, doom-laden, distortion-obsessed, steroid-injected extrapolation of stoner metal.

Ugh. Ya know, I'm just bummed. What is with people thinking these tiny, clicky, DIGITAL-sounding drums sound heavy, or even in any way good? I don't know if Albini was just too difficult to work with, or what, but they should have stuck with him. Endino had the same crunchy digital artifice going on on, "Communion" that this new stuff does. I don't see the point in going through such tasteful tube amplification if you're just going to choke it all to death with unfaithful layers of production and overly compressed and isolated drums. Remember how ****ty "And Justice for All" sounded compared to Fleming Rasmussen's work on "Puppets" and Ride t/ Lightning"?? Same sad story, I'm afraid. Can't help but dream about how amazing, "Frost Hammer" would sound in the Albini "Blessed Black Wings" sound. I'm continuously puzzled by critics not acknowledging this and praising the recording of this new material as better than Albini's. It's simply a falsehood.

Wait, "UN-like a Steve Albini"??? Blessed Black Wings is one of the greatest sounding records ever. The drums sound unbelievably natural, like the actual objects they are-perfectly and literally represented. The mix and up-front presence of that record is something Endino could only dream of achieving. A recording that simply and geniously suits the bands best material by far to date.

Sounds like devilution. Vocals do sit on top BUT at least your can hear the other instruments clearly unlike previous albums. I really like where they were going with "Death Is This Communion". I always prayed that HOF will work with an engineer/producer that can bring out their sound unlike a STEVE ALBINI. I like Jack Endino but I think I like this sound more.

I do believe, had this been given the glorious production of Blessed Black Wings, that this album would be on par with that very album. Nonetheless, this song ****in' slays! I get the distinct feeling that this is still far from the most righteous tune on the record. The badassery has yet be unleashed. The intro riff that I've heard mixed feelings on, sounds to me like Maiden, which, if I rememeber correctly, Matt Pike said was a large influence on this album. Regardless, this album will ultimately wail as mammoth and crushing as the rest of 'em.

If your not liking this song too much, plug in some headphones! I listened to it once through laptop speakers and liked it pretty well, but then plugged headphones and listened twice more, completely astonished. I think the production on this will make you way happier through good speakers. The bass might kick your ass though

I def like the track, long time HOF fan. I havent made my mind up completely about these first two songs yet however. Frankly they are both good but neither blew my socks off like the last two records. It could just be listening to them in this poor quality stream and on computer speakers, or maybe I need to hear the whole album together and take some time to get to know it. Im sure thats prob the case, HOF is my ideal heavy metal band and theve been a part of my life for years. This is what Metal is suppouse to be. Big fat drums, Warm fuzzy tube drivien guitar tone with plenty of lead, and real bass lines, and a singer who can make the paint chip off the walls, gotta love it.

Sounds like sawtooth is getting weezey in his old age!
The guitar is so hollow and Seasons in the Abyss sounding
with no "real" tone like the old days.
It will be interesting to see him touring with SLEEP this 2010 in the USA
with Al and the new drummer [from Neurosis].

Sounds like them alrighty. One of those bounds that has crafted a sound that practically makes them into their own genre. Plus Pike is always talking about some cozmick conspiracy. Also, people always focus on the guitar, which is invariably and undeniably rad, but I think Des' drums are the secret key creations and times.

HoF sound is way to massive to appreciate on some smallish computer speakers, so those judging the sonic quality/mix/eng should tap the breaks just a little. I cant wait to feed this to my set-up at home.
I have enjoyed everything I have heard from this album so far. Im eager to spend some time with it, learn it, and shred along with them.
I am also willing to bet we have yet to hear the track that will define the album...

Hey Silverback your right about the production, and I get your joke about listening to Buzzoven because Billy Anderson produced it. But watch out for the spelling nazis and English homo majors. Opps did I make a mistake? I'm sure the spelling homos out there will get me too.

When the fast riff kicks in after Matt starts singing, it's like a kick to the gut... awesome. High on Fire embodies everything that metal should be about. I can't imagine them ever "selling out".

You know when I was at Scion Fest, I ran into Matt Pike after the show and talked to him for a couple minutes. I asked him what was next for them. he said at the moment he was working at two bars as a bartender to pay rent and bills, as well as working on new High on Fire material. So, they aren't in it for the money, they are in it to make heavy music. First, he said the stuff had more of a Black Sabbath vibe, but you know, I don't care this song and Frost Hammer are great.
One thing I love about these guys is that they go to different producers and each producer captivates a part of their sound that the other producer didn't. Each record sounds like High on Fire, but it is just different sounding, and I love that about them. Whether you like it or not, you can't deny that the riff at the end is ****ing heavy as all hell. I am a first day buyer and have been supporting them since Surrounded by Thieves. I can't wait to own this album and see them on the tour. All hail the HoF!

High on Fire is one of those few bands that doesn't disappoint. Yes, they've matured and/or changed a tad since the bands inception but what band hasn't? Heavy as hell. Matt is one of the coolest, hardest working f***er's in metal. I hope this release and tour "pops" in a big way for them, after all the years in the trenches they certainly deserve it.
For any of you naysayer's....sit back, light up and enjoy. Being a critical close minded prick prevents you from truly enjoying the intention of the music. Those that can do.....those that cannot criticize.

Have been a HoF fan since their inception, they just can't do any wrong as far as I can see and much as I'll hate to see it ('my band my band my band' hehehe), they do deserve to go stratospheric with this one. Like the rest of their albums, I can't imagine there will be one duff tune on there. Great album predicted, deserved media frenzy to follow.

I'm so proud of you lovely homosexuals fighting with each other here, hopefully your rectum will be filled with lovely **** semen and your mother will lick your nostrils while fingering your grandmother's ****? LOL? For real, y'all like lil' sissy grrrls in junior high, on fire with anger and small ****es.

hmmmm...
Obviously it's a ****ty stream, but the production (here) is a tad to polished fer my tastes too...
this in no way makes me ashamed to be an (old) HoF fan, but it does makes them seem derivative of many of the NU-Metal bands who copied THEM, but unfortunately got more props than the originators (as often happens)
fer me, Jeff has had some really big shoes to fill in both George and Preston...and he hasn't quite been able to fill them...perhaps the opposing creative forces of George and Preston pushed Matt a lil harder, but i kinda miss the time when the music incorporated more varied influences like Hendrix and Sabbath,et al...now it seems to be straight outta the book of Celtic Frost and Neurosis...both of which i like LESS than High on Fire.
i'm getting the new one, as I have with all the other releases, and looking forward to eating my words...hopefully

This track reminds me a lot of Sons of Thunder and Hung, Drawn and Quartered pretty easily. They honestly haven't changed all that much. It's just a much larger collection of killer material that's all in a similar vein. People are used to that, so they don't understand it, or they just can't hear how singular, exceptional, and similar all the **** Matt writes is. And Des is always killing the kit, opting to approach things from a jazz perspective and just play along with the song rather than playing canned rhythms, which is great. His double bass control and dynamic range are top-notch to say the least. And most of all his drum sound is always massive. It's perfect, really.

Actually, High on Fire and Pike's last project, Sleep, were both done a little more 'raw' because Pike is against making things sound too polished. He wants it to sound like it really sounds in the sudio or live. Personally I respect the fact that they're willing to go that route, where a lot of other bands are all about making themseves sound better then they actually are with studio trickery. I wish more bands would follow his example. On the topic, love the new track. I have both of their previous albums and I can't wait to get the new one.

this is to the assmaster thats dogging on silverback, let me ask you something are people allowed to have opinions? is it a bad thing that he doesnt like the new high on fire as much? because if you like it or not you have to admit that they sound very different now, and you cant deny that. personaly i dont realy like it that much, but im not ganna say anything because of people like you who have nothing better to do than fight over the internet.
oh and about the buzzoven comment. even if he did just buy it and has only listened to it twice, he still has better music taste than you metallica sucks ass man.

For everyone complaining about the production, keep in mind this is over the internet. The quality is far lower on this site than it will be on the CD. CD quality streams can take forever to load, so I'm sure they reduced the quality slightly, which usually results in the highest high end stuff and the lowest low end stuff being cut. I'd wait for the actual CD to judge the production.
Song sounds ****ing awesome. Can't wait for the album

I like Albini as much as the next guy (big Shellac fan), but I think BBW sounded incredibly muddy. Can we give this whole thing a rest? HoF fuggin' KILLS IT!!!!!
